Growing up into Christ

‘You don’t become more Christ-like by being with Christians on a weekend away; this is not where God really shapes us. He shapes us in trial and suffering.’

This is what stood out to me from our lunch time bible talk at uni this week, the context of Romans 8. It’s not a comfortable thing to hear, not easy, because often, I’d rather run from trouble than persevere through it. I suppose, though, that it is a good thing to know before you go through real trial, so that you are somewhat prepared and can be reminded, when you experience suffering, that God is faithful, and will make us more like Christ.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Romans 8:28-29
